Hand Washing …. day 16
We all know how important hand washing is. This one simple act can prevent us from catching all sorts of germs and getting sick. If you are like me, you feel like you are constantly sending the rug rats off to wash their hands. 20 seconds of washing with soap!!!! They are so sweet, singing their chosen song to make sure they wash the hands long enough. But oh what some of those soaps and fragrances can do to out hands!
Soaps are designed to remove dirt, sweat, sebum, and oils from the skin. This is achieved through surfactants which work by surrounding dirt particles and oils, dissolving them in water, and removing them as water runs over the skin. While these surfactants aid in the normal exfoliation process of the skin, they can also be harmful to the outer layers of our skin causing after-wash tightness (AWT), dryness, damage to the barrier function of the skin, redness, irritation and itching.
Some hand wash liquids use petroleum-based surfactants containing detergents such as diethanolamine (DEA) and sodium dodecylbenzensulfonate. Both ingredients can be skin and eye irritants. Shaklee has developed a super mild and sudsy wash that does not contain these hazardous ingredients. This soap-free cleanser is pH balanced and hypoallergenic. It has wheat germ oil and algae extract to moisturize; soy protein to condition; aloe, marshmallow (Althaea officinalis), and linden flower (Tilia cordata) extracts to soothe; and rosemary and arnica extracts to energize. Sounds more like a spa treatment, huh?
